1. Explore your Medicare options

Determine whether your current plan is meeting your health needs or if you want to shop for another plan. You can find a plan during the upcoming Open Enrollment Period (OEP) Oct. 15 – Dec. 7.

First time enrolling in Medicare? Enroll in a plan three months before or after your 65th birthday to avoid a penalty.If you’re under age 65, you may be eligible for Medicare if you’ve received Social Security/Railroad Retirement Board disability benefits for 24+ months or have been diagnosed with end-stage renal disease or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

Changes in employment coverage?If you’re 65+, enroll in a plan up to eight months after your employer coverage ends to avoid a penalty.

4. Enroll in a Medicare plan

  • When you research Medicare coverage, check to see if your pharmacy is a Preferred Pharmacy in the plan’s network.

  • Consider enrolling in a Medicare plan with Walgreens as a Preferred Pharmacy. Explore your coverage options or visit your local store to get a list of plans where Walgreens is preferred.

  • Decide on a plan during the Open Enrollment Period (OEP) from Oct. 15 – Dec. 7 each year.You can re-enroll in your current plan or switch plans. Your coverage will begin on Jan. 1 if you sign up during OEP.

  • First-time eligibility for Medicare? Enroll in a plan any time of the year, starting 3 months before your 65th birthday and ending 3 months after your 65th birthday (to avoid a penalty). Many Medicare Advantage or Medicare Prescription Drug Plans have a preferred pharmacy network. Preferred network pharmacies can offer lower copays because they have an agreement with your plan to charge less.
