Best At Home Color Ever!

I've been coloring my dark auburn hair for decades. While I generally leave it to the pros, circumstances don't always allow. At home attempts, have ranged from "Eh! Not horrible," to 3 total disasters that landed me in the salon for an near emergency correction, costing me twice as much as a full head of highlights would have. 10 years later, I hesitated to buy (of all things), a box color from the drug store. My original plan was to do the all over at home and hit the salon for highlights as a hair model. No need! This color is rich, gorgeous, dramatic (high fashion not Bozo meets Lucy), and really does create that "prismatic" effect of highlights! I put this up there with my two favorite lines of top salon reds! The color is as pictured on the box for my shade. No purple surprise! Of course, this IS a chemical treatment, so you do want to read the box or at least look at the pictures before purchasing to see how it will affect your current color (mine was dyed a darkish chestnut brown w/red highlights), and if it's for your color at all. For example, I doubt there's a blond color that would do much of anything to my hair w/out my bleaching it first. So do check it out. I'm thrilled with the results. Tomorrow, I'm going for my second round... 5 months later. I was going to lie. That sounds bad. It is, but alas... my sad little truth. I CAN say, however, that fading has been astoundingly minimal! Not as rich as it was, but not a hint of brassiness, orange, etc. A box color? YES! I know! With Walgreen's frequent sales, it's so inexpensive that I was able to spring for a lovely, shampoo and conditioner for colored hair, from my favorite beauty supply store. I'm sure that helped with the retention. Next two for one sale, I'm stocking up! I carefully applied to the roots all over first (using a brush purchased at the beauty supply store), and then used the applicator bottles (two boxes for my long, thick hair), to saturate the rest. Just PERFECT! I'm still getting loads of compliments and the occasional request for my colorist's name! Truly above and beyond what I ever imagined box color could be!

Looking for something natural but bold?

Pros: Easy to work with, gel does not drip or run, over flow or smudges on skin come off easily, very even color, highlights are amazing, found the images to be true to the shade

Cons: only concern is fade-color - too soon to tell

I've been changing my hair color since I was in high school. My own color is a medium auburn which was fine - a time or two I've gone back to it and stayed there for years, but in high school Sun-In was the rage, I sprayed and got carrot orange streaks nothing blonde anywhere. I've been coloring ever since.

I've had it done, I've done it myself. It's been a medium brown for a while since fading to that from having done a dark warm brown. I decided it was time for a change and I wanted something bold and different. After an hour long debate with myself in the color aisle I went with this one: Crushed Garnet.

Since my hair IS auburn it does tend to want to pick up any red/gold colors and really accentuate them. So when I do a red I try to go dark, almost plum and mahogany tones to get what I'm looking for. This one turned out perfect!

Yes the conditioner is wonderful - my hair is very shiny, very silky and very soft. Since I had to buy two because my hair is long I have enough conditioner to last me about five weeks. I'll be using the supplied conditioner once a week for a deep conditioner.

In regards to the person who posted her hair was dark blonde and she chose this one and her hair turned candy apple red - usually if the box doesn't show all the possible shades of hair color and what they'll look like it's because it's not recommended for a particular base color. The box of Crushed Garnet specifically mentions the red/orange factor in lighter hair. I saw it because of wanting to be careful with how my hair picks up reds and golds.

Also - if you have too much red, gold or orange in your hair color, Sally Beauty supply sells a little blister squeeze tube of a product called "RGC Corrector." It's in the aisle with hair coloring. You add it to your shampoo. It will tone down the over done shades. Works well for people who swim frequently in chlorinated pools and don't rinse well ending up with that orangey color.

On my hair this color turned out a very rich mahogany - pretty much as the name suggests. It's a deep red - not Sharon Osborne red whom I think looks amazing with that color - but a very dark almost plum tone. I absolutely love it.

Cons: Doesn't Last

I have natural black hair but I usually color it a light brown. My roots started growing in and it was time for some retouching, but I wanted a change, and this color really stood out. I loved how the color turned out. It looked better than the picture. It was a dark red/purple color and I got so many compliments on my hair. Everyone loved it. I'm gonna stay with this color for a long time. The only down side was that the color faded after a few weeks of washing.

Know how your hair tends to act to color

Cons: Color Misrepresented

I usually color my hair dark natural blonde, but I decided to do something bold and different. I loved the picture color on the box. However, my hair turned out candy apple red, rather than a darker mahogany. (Though, I do have problems with my hair soaking up excess red from hair dyes and not picking up the browns or blondes as much, and I was doing a pretty drastic change.) The color it turned out looks good, though it wasn't what I wanted. But my hair does look and feel very soft and very shiny. It's only been a week, so I can't speak to fade out yet, but it still looks fine so far.

I wish the box had pictures of how the color will turn out on different starting hair colors, like other brands do. If it was the right shade for me, it would be absolutely gorgeous. Think I'll go a shade or two darker next time.
