COBRA (a.k.a. the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act)

What is it?

Under federal law, you can stay on your employer’s plan for 18 to 36 months.

Who is this for?

COBRA's high costs mean it's unlikely to be a common solution, but it may be a good option if it's important to maintain your current access to care. For example, during pregnancy or while treating serious chronic conditions like cancer.

How do I enroll?

Speak with your employer’s Human Resources department.

Other considerations

COBRA can be expensive, as you must pay the total cost of insurance coverage (yours and your employer’s contribution). COBRA can be elected retroactively for 60 days, meaning you can wait up to two months before paying your premiums and elect to enroll if needed.
