Manufacturer Support Programs

What is it?

"Patient Assistance Programs" (PAPs) are charitable programs run by companies that make prescription drugs to support patients who cannot afford their medications.

Additionally, pharmaceutical manufacturers offer various coupons and savings cards that may provide savings on out-of-pocket costs, depending on your medication and insurance coverage.

Who is this for?

While each PAP's eligibility requirements are different, these programs are typically for uninsured or under-insured patients filling high-cost medications, such as those used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and cancer. Many programs also have monthly income limitations to be eligible to participate.

In contrast, manufacturer coupons often can only be used in tandem with employer-based or commercial health insurance, cannot be used by those who have coverage through a government program like Medicaid or Medicare, and are not intended for customers without qualifying coverage.

How do I enroll?

Refer to the website of the manufacturer of your medication. Another resource is needymeds.org, which offers a simple search tool to identify if a PAP or coupon may be available for your medication.

Other considerations

Most PAPs restrict where and how you can get your medication and typically do not allow Walgreens and other retail pharmacies to dispense these drugs.
