Why Use Breast Pads?
Breastfeeding a baby is largely a positive experience for new mothers, but it can pose challenges during your day. Many women experience let-down or leaking at unexpected times, and this can lead to embarrassing wet spots on the front of a top or dress. Breast pads are absorbent padding that is worn inside of a bra to soak up any leakage before it can transfer your undergarments and clothing. You can also wear breast pads in a sports bra or bandeau at night to control wetness.
What Type of Breast Pads Should I Use?
There are two main types of breast pads available for nursing mothers: disposable and washable.
- Disposable pads are usually sold in large quantities and may have peel-and-stick adhesive on the back to help the pads adhere to your bra. At the end of the day or after a leak occurs, you can remove the breast pad, throw it away and replace it with a new one.
- Washable breast pads are made from absorbent fabric that can stand up to all-day wear.
When necessary, you can launder the breast pads in the washing machine, following the care instructions provided with the pads. Some women find washable pads softer and more comfortable to wear or choose them in order to limit the amount of waste that they produce with their personal care routines.
Solutions for Post-Mastectomy Care
Post-mastectomy breast pads are a type of prosthesis that is worn inside of a bra to fill in the cups and create a shapely silhouette. You may choose to wear this type of breast pad prior to reconstruction surgery, before you receive your permanent prosthesis or every day on an ongoing basis if you prefer the look and feel of pads.
