Hot irons

Hot irons are an effective way of straightening curly and hard-to-manage hair. They are available in a variety of styles, materials, and shapes, so you should select one that is appropriate for your hair types and styling needs. Walgreens.com carries hot irons from well-known brands like Conair and Hot Tools.

Materials for different types of hair

Hot irons are made out of several material types. Titanium irons heat evenly through the straightening plates, so they take little time to use correctly. Ceramic strengthens the hair cuticle, and is a good choice for avoiding frizzing. Tourmaline-infused ceramic is more expensive than regular ceramic, but can pay off in extra shine. Ionic plates change the charge of your hair, enlivening dry or damaged locks.

Using hot irons

Before using hot irons, apply a keratin oil or solution to your hair. Hot irons expose the hair to very high heat, so a keratin treatment is necessary to prevent breakage, split ends or other types of damage. Apply hot irons to clean and dry hair. If using on wet hair, towel dry first, and only iron wet hair with a wet to dry styling iron. Comb your hair with a wide-toothed comb so that there are no tangles. Split your hair into one and two-inch sections and iron section by section. Work slowly and in a step-by-step manner so that you don't miss any sections. If you need to straighten the same section more than once, let that piece of hair cool completely before trying again.
