The COVID-19 vaccine
is now available and targets the current circulating variants
What you need to know
- The updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccines targets the Omicron JN.1 lineage (KP.2 strain) that is the most common circulating variant right now.
- Regardless of previous vaccination history, the CDC recommends a single dose of the updated COVID-19 vaccine for most people.
- Children ages 6 months to 4 years old may need multiple doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to be up to date, depending on the number of doses previously received and their age.
Why should I get this vaccine?
- It’s important to protect yourself and stay up to date with vaccination as the COVID-19 virus continues to mutate. This formulation is designed to target the most recent variant.
- Immunity can fade over time, and it leaves even vaccinated people vulnerable to infection. The best way to stay protected is to stay up to date on COVID-19 vaccines.
- Getting vaccinated may help reduce other complications, such as developing long COVID-19.
More than one vaccine in one visit

The CDC has no preference for any authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine. If you happen to have a preference, when scheduling an appointment you’ll be able to select between Pfizer and Moderna for a specific appointment date. If you’d like to receive the Novavax vaccine, you may select “no preference” when scheduling your appointment and ask a pharmacy team member for that vaccine during your appointment.
Vaccine availability varies by Walgreens locations and not all may be available in all areas.
The FDA has issued Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to oral antivirals for the treatment of COVID-19, and Walgreens pharmacists can prescribe Paxlovid®. Right now, select Walgreens pharmacies will be able to dispense Paxlovid to eligible patients.
