Understanding Sildenafil
What is Sildenafil?
Sildenafil, generic for Viagra, is an oral prescription medication used to treat male sexual dysfunction, also known as impotence or erectile dysfunction (ED). It is a tablet taken prior to sexual activity no more than once every 24 hours. Sildenafil is also available in other product forms and is used to treat high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs (pulmonary arterial hypertension, PAH) in both men and women. These products should not be used together or as a substitute for each other.
How does sildenafil work?
Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase-5 enzyme (PDE-5) inhibitor. In combination with sexual stimulation, sildenafil causes increased blood flow to the penis, helping men achieve and maintain an erection. Sildenafil has no effect in the absence of sexual stimulation.
How to take sildenafil for best results
Sildenafil is best taken approximately one hour before sexual activity, but it can be taken any time between 30 minutes to four hours prior. It should be taken as needed but no more than once every 24 hours. Sildenafil can be taken with or without food.
How long does sildenafil take to work?
Sildenafil only works to improve erectile dysfunction when used in combination with sexual stimulation. It starts working in approximately 60 minutes.
How long does sildenafil last?
Erections from sildenafil can last two to four hours. Patients should seek emergency treatment if an erection lasts longer than four hours.
What are the side effects of sildenafil?
Like all medications, sildenafil can cause side effects, some of which may be serious. Some common side effects of sildenafil for erectile dysfunction are headache, flushing (warm, red skin, typically of the face, neck, ears or chest) congested nose and indigestion. These side effects should be temporary and go away after the medication wears off. Contact your doctor if these side effects are bothersome or do not go away.
Get medical help right away if you notice any serious side effects such as sudden hearing impairment or loss, visual disturbances (vision color changes, blurred vision, sensitivity to light), a sudden drop in blood pressure or an erection that lasts more than four hours. Some rare but serious eye problems have occurred, which may lead to a change in eyesight, including sometimes temporary or permanent loss of eyesight. Rarely, sildenafil can cause abnormal heartbeat, heart attack or stroke. This is more likely to occur with people who have heart problems before taking sildenafil. Be sure to talk with your Walgreens healthcare provider about your full medical history to ensure sildenafil is safe for you to take.

- Sildenafil vs. tadalafil: What’s the difference?
Sildenafil (generic for Viagra) and tadalafil (generic for Cialis) are both phosphodiesterase-5 enzyme (PDE-5) inhibitors that work the same way to treat erectile dysfunction. Both can be taken as needed at least 30 minutes before sexual activity once every 24 hours. Tadalafil may work longer in your body than sildenafil. As a result, there are lower strength tadalafil options that are taken every day on a scheduled basis regardless of the timing of sexual activity. Sildenafil and tadalafil should never be taken at the same time. Speak with your healthcare provider to determine which medication is right for you.
- Sildenafil vs. Vardenafil: What’s the difference?
Sildenafil (generic for Viagra) and vardenafil (generic for Levitra) are both phosphodiesterase-5 enzyme (PDE-5) inhibitors that work the same way to treat erectile dysfunction. Vardenafil should be taken one hour before sexual activity, while sildenafil can be taken as early as 30 minutes and up to four hours before sexual activity. Both medications last approximately the same amount of time in your body and should be taken on an as-needed basis, but no more than once every 24 hours. Sildenafil and vardenafil are available as oral tablets when used to treat erectile dysfunction. Sildenafil and vardenafil should never be taken at the same time. Speak with your healthcare provider about which medication is right for you.
