Walgreens believes everyone deserves quality healthcare

By increasing access & education through partnerships, we support the wellbeing of local communities, especially in these focus areas:

  • Social determinants of health (SDOH) are non-medical factors that influence a person’s health and well-being, including where they’re born, grow, live, work, worship and age. Walgreens recognizes health disparities & SDOH, and we offer support & resources to reduce barriers like health literacy, lack of access to transportation, affordability and digital access.

  • Vaccinations & testing for COVID-19, flu and routine immunizations help reduce the risk and severity of illnesses. Walgreens offers patient education to address vaccine hesitancy and accessibility to vaccines & testing.

  • Medication adherence means patients take medications on time and stay on them as prescribed. Chronic conditions last 1+ years (like heart disease or cancer) & require ongoing medical care. Walgreens offers many solutions for patients to manage their chronic conditions.

  • Wellness & care looks at a person’s overall health and well-being. Walgreens pharmacies work with communities & local partners to provide clinical care services for physical, emotional & mental health as well as personalized, whole-person healthcare.

Education

Expert answers for all

Our pharmacy team offers tailored advice for patients and helps them feel comfortable when discussing sensitive topics.

We addressed healthcare gaps and improved patient outcomes through community-focused pharmacy & healthcare initiatives.

In August 2020 our first phase of pilots launched in Chicago’s South Side and West Side communities to learn how we could best serve our patients.

We educated our patients on diabetes management, pediatric asthma management and prescription pickup.

The second phase of our Chicago Health Equity Pilot launched in June 2022 and includes programs on mental health wellness check-ins, new medication routines & taking prescriptions on time. Plus, the pilot identifies patient challenges to picking up prescriptions and offers FREE Same Day Delivery to address transportation barriers. This phase also includes Walgreens team member coaching to enhance patient engagement and support.

Opening Quotation Mark…ensure essential pharmacy services remain available to the communities that rely on them the most, improve and provide education on these services, and get that much closer to closing health gaps for our most vulnerable neighborhoods once and for all.”

— Lori E. Lightfoot, Chicago mayor

Our care management pilot focused on improving the health of our patients living with diabetes.

As part of our pilot program in 2020, we focused on the importance of medication adherence (taking medicine as prescribed). Our pharmacists at select Chicagoland stores called patients living with diabetes who struggled with adherence and discussed:

Patient’s medication questions
Importance of diabetes medication adherence
Adherence barriers and ways to fill gaps in care

Patients who met with pharmacists one-on-one through our Chicago Diabetes Health Equity Pilot significantly improved medication adherence compared to patients who didn’t receive enhanced education and intervention.3

Partnership

Community-based healthcare

We partner with local organizations, churches and healthcare partners across the healthcare system to reach more patients and reduce health inequities.

We partnered with Vitamin Angels & Chicago community organizations to provide access for underserved pregnant women.

Nearly 1 million U.S. pregnant women have limited access to prenatal vitamins due to gaps in insurance coverage.4

With the help of Vitamin Angels, we offered a FREE six-month supply of prenatal vitamins & minerals to women at select stores on Chicago’s South Side and West Side. We were also able to:

Provide educational brochures
& vouchers for Vitamin Angels prenatal vitamins
Teach about nutrition
& the importance of taking prenatal vitamins daily
Include community partners
to give vouchers to underserved women

The second phase of this pilot focuses on easier access to care, new partners and adding more locations to increase impact and reach.

In addition to our own services, we engage with community and national partnerships to reach medically underserved patients.

Uber

We partnered with Uber in 2021 to secure free rides to and from vaccination sites, with up to 10M free or discounted rides.

Community

To reach our patients wherever they are, we brought our COVID-19 vaccinations to community members through offsite clinics.

These were hosted locally in church halls, school gymnasiums and other settings.

We also hosted events to address vaccine hesitancy with help from 750+ diverse, community-based partners.
